Nicaraguan Birds

Spectacular Birds in Nicaragua

General Outline

Nicaragua's bird population may very well be described in terms of unparalleled magnificence and abundance.

Over 600 bird species are listed as living in or migrating, during cold seasons in the North, to Nicaragua. Both the competent, professional birdwatcher and the amateur birder will be amazed at the ample range of the feathered creatures populating Nicaragua's forests, shoreline and even urban neighborhoods.

Birds and Locations

We will start with Nicaragua's national bird, namely the motmot, commonly known as the guardabarranco.

The guardabarranco can be identified without too much trouble by its long, bright blue tail, paired-feathered, with more than ¾ of the feather barbs lost down to the very ends of the tail, where two hanging blue feather "medallions" bring the finishing touches to the bird's tail.

The astounding thing about the motmots is that they build their nest in the ground, the same place where they lay their eggs.

Also, it is said that placing a guardabarranco in captivity will quickly lead to its death. Its habitat can be included even within city limits, for it happens often that these birds are seen in the capital of Nicaragua, Managua.

However, they are regularly met in the forests across the country, as well as in natural protected areas, such as the very popular Miraflor Nature Reserve, a mountain area at about 30 kilometers from Esteli.
