It is divided into 15 departments (departamentos) and two self-governing regions (autonomous communities) based on the Spanish model, for administrative purposes. Located 116.85 meters above sea level, Chichigalpa is a municipality in the Chinandega department of Nicaragua. The department of Chinandega is characterized by spectacular scenery, beautiful beaches, and a multitude of relatively unexplored attractions. Pristine beaches, historical towns, estuaries filled with mangrove forest, and some of Nicaragua's finest churches can all be found in this department. The main city of the department, also called Chinandega, can be reached in about two hours from Managua. Situated at 124 km from Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, Chichigalpa is located at the foot of the San Cristóbal volcano, the highest volcano in the Maribios range of Nicaragua, at 1745 meters above sea level.
