About the City of Chichigalpa

Nicaragua is a unitary republic. It is divided into 15 departments (departamentos) and two self-governing regions (autonomous communities) based on the Spanish model, for administrative purposes.

Located 116.85 meters above sea level, Chichigalpa is a municipality in the Chinandega department of Nicaragua.

The department of Chinandega is characterized by spectacular scenery, beautiful beaches, and a multitude of relatively unexplored attractions. Pristine beaches, historical towns, estuaries filled with mangrove forest, and some of Nicaragua's finest churches can all be found in this department.

The main city of the department, also called Chinandega, can be reached in about two hours from Managua.

Situated at 124 km from Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, Chichigalpa is located at the foot of the San Cristóbal volcano, the highest volcano in the Maribios range of Nicaragua, at 1745 meters above sea level.

Chichigalpa is famous for being the location where the well-known rum of Nicaragua, Flor de Caña, is prepared.

Known as the land of Ron and Azúcar, Chichigalpa became a city in September 25th
1894.

The name of the city is composed by two words, chichi-meaning girl, and galpa-place. Others say the name of the city means-the place of the potters' ovens.

Today the city counts 46,185 inhabitants, being bordered at North by Chinandega, at South by León, at East by Posoltega and Quezalguaque, and at West by Corinto, El Realejo and Chinandega.
