Corinto Nicaragua

Experience the Quiet and Tranquil village of Corinto, Nicaragua

Nicaragua has stunning landscapes, vast cultural treasures, and an intriguing history. Up until recently, Nicaragua had been known for the civil war between the Sandinistas and the Contras, which lasted for years before finally ending.

Today, the soldiers and guerrillas have been replaced with tour guides eager to show you their beautiful country. Nicaragua has something for even the most experienced traveler.

It can offer a multitude of activities from touring the capital of Managua to wandering the cobblestone streets of colonial Granada on Lake Nicaragua or exploring one of the country's volcanoes.

You can also visit the many churches of Puerto Corinto and browse the small shops. This quiet village on Nicaragua's tropical Pacific coast serves as your gateway to the rest of Nicaragua.

Corinto lies on the northwest Pacific coast of Nicaragua and is one of the most important cities and ports in the district of Chinandega. The town was founded in 1863 and was named in honor of the Greek city of Corinth.

It is a railroad terminus and Nicaragua's leading Pacific port. From here are exported coffee, cotton, sugar, hides, and woods.

Corinto is approximately 14 miles south of Aserradores Now that Marina Puesta Del Sol is open for business few boats are stopping into Corinto.

However, Corinto is an authentic Nicaraguan experience that shouldn't be missed. The inner harbor at Corinto is well protected. Anchorage can be taken in front of Ali Baba's restaurant situated beside a marked, silver colored Petro-Nic fuel tank. The beach is full with a row of thatched restaurants, bars, palm trees and people.

Historically Corinto had a reputation as a rough and gritty seaport. Corinto has undergone a major change for the better in more recent times. The current mayor has worked dedicatedly with his council to bring some changes to the community.

The pride of Corinto is the new museum in the compounds of the neat and tidy central park. The streets are surprisingly clean in the downtown area and for the most part safe to walk around at night.

However, as is the case in most places, there are certain areas that should be given a wide berth after dark. Barrio Los Pescadores and Barrio El Chorizo are best avoided by all except the hardiest sailors.
