Nicaragua in Facts

Facts and Numbers

The Pacific Ocean borders it on the western part, while the Caribbean Sea bathes its eastern shores. The northern neighbor is Honduras, the southern one – Costa Rica. This is Nicaragua, the largest country and republic of the Central America. However, for a land found among the first one hundred largest countries in the world, its population is rather small, barely reaching 5,500,000 inhabitants.

The capital city is Managua, famous for its puzzling streets where a non-local can easily get lost or entangled in some incident, since the organization of addresses and street signs is somewhat perplexing for the visitor. The nation’s official language is Spanish, yet English is spoken as well – mainly on the Atlantic coast – along with a number or Caribbean native languages, belonging to ethnical groups such as the Miskitos, the Ramas, or the Sumos. The main religion is Roman Catholic. Finally, the national currency is the cordoba oro (the gold cordoba).

Although in the past Nicaragua displayed a rather unbalanced, insecure political status, firmly pointed by conflicts generated by the Somozas’ tyranny during the first half of the 20th century, and then by the insurgency of the Sandinistas and the hostilities led against the Contras, nowadays it has come to be one of the safest republics of the Central America. It does not mean that there is no longer any trace of hardship among the country’s citizens; on the contrary, Nicaraguans still undergo considerable deficiencies in their standard of living, deficiencies which obstruct the reaching of a higher level of material comfort.

Nonetheless, the country’s efforts directed towards the development of a fairly determined tourist industry, as well as its natural exquisiteness have generated an increased foreign interest in the holidaymaker’s business. Additionally, several rare fauna and flora species which can be found in Nicaragua form a supplementary reason for the foreigners’ increasing curiosity in what this land is able to offer.

A geographical mapping of Nicaragua reveals a basic arrangement into three main parts: the Caribbean Lowlands at the East, the Central Highlands, and the Pacific Lowlands at the West. To what concerns climate, temperature is Nicaragua is mainly dependent on heights. However, Nicaragua’s tropical forests’ climate is generally moist and warm, sometimes even burning hot. In the mountainous sites, height is the chief element in the determining of temperatures, yet it is definitely cooler than in the tropical locations.
