Laguna de Perlas
Serenity on the
Atlantic Coast of Nicaragua The greatest
shoreline lagoon of Nicaragua is Laguna de Perlas – or Pearl Lagoon
– whose central town is known under the same name. The lagoon
reaches more than 500 square kilometers and is situated north of
Bluefields, about 50 kilometers away from this latter location. From
Bluefields it takes about an hour and a half to reach Laguna de
Perlas by boat.
The main attraction of Laguna de Perlas is given by its unbelievable
state of tranquility. It is practically a paradise of peace and
serenity. And not just that; it is a virtual nature wonderland,
resplendent with all sorts of birds and animals, with mangos and
unspoiled, never-ending miles of beach. To the majority of the
tourists the area is still unknown, a phenomenon fairly advantageous
for those who, nonetheless, have heard about the region and are
knowledgeable to what concerns a genuine relaxing, unperturbed
vacation within the borders of a coastal dreamland.
The main town in the area, also called Laguna de Perlas, is situated
on the shores of the lagoon. The majority of its inhabitants is
represented by Creoles; however, there exist some other ethnic
groups, such as the Garifuna, Rama and the Miskitos. The inhabitants
of the town speak a Creole English; in the whole lagoon, many
populations speak English, besides the indigenous dialects. Spanish
is spoken as well, yet not in current, regular conversation. The
people amaze the traveler by their quiet way of leading their life.
Their main occupation focuses on fishing. The tourist will certainly
enjoy having meals of freshly caught and prepared fish or other
seafood, such as shrimps or lobster.
In fact, it seems that trying the local, exotic cuisine is among the
best pursuits a tourist can undertake in Laguna de Perlas. The
alternative is to enjoy promenading along the sidewalks, a good
opportunity to contemplate what a quiet life really means and to get
in touch with the local people, who will not fail to provide their
help or advice, in case the visitor needs it. Also, while
promenading, the tourist may see what is very likely the single
“monument” in the area, besides the Moravian church, namely an iron
cannon, displaying the mark of the British Empire (the unicorn& the
lion).
