Masaya - Nicaragua
The City of
Handcraft Creativity
Canvas painting, ceramics, burning and sculpting designs in leather,
artistic handling of various types of cloth, all these and more have
contributed to the labeling of the whole department of Masaya as the
leading department of the national Nicaraguan folklore. Traditions
are in high rank in Masaya. Small artisans’ shops build the specific
magnetism of the market in Masaya. Leather products, ceramics,
magnificent tableware made out of wood, paintings, and more products
from the same categories form the main attractions in the particular
Masaya market. The market will amaze through its overall colorful,
vibrant display of products, genuine Nicaraguan souvenirs.
Within the same Old Market, several bistros serve mouthwatering
meals, specific for the Nicaraguan cooking. The dining spot within
the market is indeed small; however size has nothing to do with
quality here. The visitor is most reliably going to enjoy the
typical Nicaragua gastronomy.
Among the natural sites the city can offer, one is the Masaya
Lagoon, on the margins of which the town is situated. Despite the
beautiful landscape one can observe when moving toward the Masaya
Lagoon, landscaping is about everything one can do here. The waters
of the lagoon are rather polluted; subsequently, other activities
are not allowed here.
Very near to the city lies a historical citadel, built over a
hundred years ago, namely the Fortaleza El Coyotepe. Throughout the
different historical times, the fortification served both as an
observation post and as a prison. The cells can be visited. The same
goes for visiting the citadel’s towers, from where you can enjoy a
view of the Masaya town, of the Masaya Lagoon and even of the Masaya
Volcano, the main tourist attraction in the area.
The Masaya Volcano, situated at the center of the Masaya Volcano
National Park, offers the visitors magnificent views of an
uninterruptedly smoking crater. Once called by the Spanish colonists
“the devil’s mouth”, the volcano erupted quite a few times
throughout history, leaving the marks of its lava outbursts in the
general landscape of the area. Subsequently, volcanic ash, volcanic
mud and volcanic rocks are the characteristic environmental
components here. Hiking towards the crater of the Masaya Volcano can
be tough, yet extremely rewarding. If hiking is not one of your
favorite preferred options, you can rent a car or hire a taxi driver
so as to drive you as up as possible, as near as possible to the
volcano.
