Matiquas-Nicaragua
Mountainous Lands
The town of Matiguas is located at a distance of about 240-250
kilometers at the north of the city of Matagalpa. Located at a
height of over 250 meters above the sea level and surrounded by
hilly and mountainous lands, Matiguas offers great opportunities for
hiking towards mountain peaks (in Spanish, peak is identified as “cerro”,
a word frequently used in the designation of mountain peaks).
The traveler can embark on a trip of a few days in the area, just to
get familiarized with what cloud forest vegetation and fauna means.
Additionally, the people community in Matiguas leads a very peaceful
way of living, based on cattle rising and, where the case allows it,
on cultivating coffee plantations, the same as in the very near
vicinity of Matagalpa. Unfortunately, deforestation is a current
phenomenon in the region, due to the necessity of better approaching
cattle rising and of providing cattle with optimal conditions of
sheltering and nourishment.
However, the forest is still spectacular and hiking is the
superlative manifestation of ecotourism in this territory. Ascending
towards the surrounding peaks can prove a rather difficult task,
however extremely rewarding in the landscape opportunities provided.
Cerro El Bijagual, Sierra Quiragua, Cerro El
Destino, and Cerro Paipi hold the supremacy among the highest peaks
here. Additionally, scenic narrow valleys formed by the impressive
number of rivers that go across the municipality of Matiguas are a
plus for the traveler who truly enjoys nature. The most important
ones are Rio Bulbul (often spelled as Bul Bul), Arenas Blancas, El
Cacao, Upa, Paiwas, Tierra Blanca, Likia.
Splendid ecosystems can be viewed in the neighboring forests. When
you enter the cloud forest, the richness of mosses enveloping the
ground wherever you look, but also the tree trunks, is a good reason
of surprise and admiration. Moreover, the lavishness of the heavy,
ample leaves of the bromeliads, the fresh fragrance of the orchids,
and the crowning tree ferns complete the ideal representation of the
abundant vegetation of a tropical forest.
Among the trees, a variety of cedars, pine trees
and sweet gum trees, as well as many other types, simply enchant the
tourist who stops for a few minutes to take a break from the
difficult climb and pays attention to the details the guide is able
to offer.
