The Tourists’ Preferred Places in Nicaragua

The largest country of Central America is blessed with settings which can satisfy every traveler’s preference. From modern cities to towns pervaded by history, from mountain forests to white sandy beaches, from lakes to volcanoes, Nicaragua covers them all, taking care at the same time of each tourist’s favorite spot.

Managua, the modern capital of Nicaragua, on the shore of Lake Managua, is the place almost everyone visits due to several of its attractions and to the fact that many means of transport to other parts of the country are accessible from here. In the capital of the country, the National Theater Rubén Darío and the National Stadium are some of the most impressive manmade sights, along with the Old Cathedral (now ruined) and the National Museum.

From the natural settings within and around the city, lagoons are the most visited: Laguna Asososca, the city’s source of potable water, which can only be viewed, from understandable reasons; Laguna Tiscapa, the tourist’s favorite, since it can be deeply explored and canopy tours are organized here; Laguna Acahualinca, where swimming is not possible, yet the view is spectacular, especially because the lagoon is close to the historical setting of the Acahualinca ancient footprints; and finally, Laguna Nejapa, which is another occasion of impressive panoramas.

Another Nicaraguan city favored by tourists is Granada, situated on the northwestern shore of Lake Nicaragua. Tourists love it for its architecture from which the pervading colonial atmosphere of the city radiates. The colonial buildings enclosing the central park of Granada and a walk through the city will make you fall in love with the general, quiet mood dominating the whole setting.

The Volcan Mombacho is one of the nature’s attractions most visited by travelers, due to its magnificence and, additionally, to the fact that it is one of the Nicaraguan volcanoes less difficult to hike. Lake Nicaragua is another sight easy to access from Granada; tourists manifest interest in boating on the lake due to the fact that it shelters the only freshwater sharks in the world; an additional spectacular sight is offered by the numerous populations of birds.

León, frequently labeled as the intellectual capital of Nicaragua, is a city situated at a distance of about an hour and a half from Managua. The city is famous for its harmonious display of colonial architecture; one fine example of such architecture is given by the house of Rubén Darío, now turned into a museum. The churches of La Recoleccion, La Merced, and El Calvario are also some of the visitors’ favorite places. However, the number one choice when visiting León remains its Cathedral, one of the largest in Central America.
