Surfing in Nicaragua

Surfing in Paradise

Nicaragua may not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of surfing in Central America, but it really is one of those places that offers everything a surfer needs to enjoy his stay. Year-round surf, warm waters and great waves are just some of the things that are causing Nicaragua to gain popularity amongst surfers – especially when you compare the relatively empty waters of the seas in this country to the busy waters of nearby Costa Rica.

What is it that makes Nicaragua so special for surfers? Well, for one thing, the massive Lake Nicaragua means that there is a constant off shore trade wind which blows nearly 330 days of the year. This means that you’ll almost always be able to enjoy good surf. You can really pick and choose. Another factor is that these winds last for most of the day – they don’t die down after a blistery morning and leave you bobbing quietly in the ocean.

Another factor is that the geographical area is varied, meaning you can enjoy both point, beach and river mouth breaks. And on top of it, some beaches don’t often see a lot of attention so you can find your own little spot of surfing heaven and not worry about bumping into other surfers or bathers. It is just you and the surf!

Güasacate is one of Nicaragua's better beaches but remains virtually unvisited and undeveloped. It's a huge stretch of sand with nice waves and several wealthy homes—which may complicate the development and use of the beach for the public.

The entrance to Güasacate is located five to eight kilometers down the first left-hand road after crossing a bridge in Las Salinas. Güasacate is home to a surf camp run by a Florida native known throughout Las Salinas only as "J.J." Upon arriving at Güasacate, look for the tents and campers. The road to the beach will take you past several beautiful salt flats, from which the nearby town of Las Salinas gets its name.

One of the most popular surfing spots in Nicaragua is Popoyo, located a few beaches from Morgan’s Rock where you will find various surf breaks ranging from hollow, A-frame beach break to super fun, classic point breaks, to critical outer reef breaks.
