Things to Do in Nicaragua
A Wide Range of Activities
In Nicaragua, activities range from hiking and biking to fishing,
swimming or simply sunbathing. In the bigger towns, one can also
organize visits to museums or go enjoy a musical or theatrical
performance. However, several of the top favorite activities of the
tourists in Nicaragua are related to natural settings, since this
country has an entire array of natural wonders exhibited at any time
of the year, in each of its various and incredibly rich (as scenic
landscapes) regions.
Hiking is in high rank in a country more often than not labeled as
the country of lakes and volcanoes. Hiking to reach the volcanoes
can be a demanding task, yet it is very popular among the nature
lovers who visit Nicaragua. Those who are not used to more difficult
climbing are advised to choose the Masaya or the Mombacho, because
they are the less difficult to ascend. While ascending the Masaya
Volcano, you will hike through the Masaya Volcano National Park and
have the chance to view some of the local flora and fauna.
In the same area, hikers also generally visit the Santiago crater,
which is still smoking, being the most active crater in the region.
To what concerns the Mombacho Volcano, hiking here is a bit more
difficult than on the Masaya, however less challenging than hiking,
for instance, on the Volcano Concepcion. Nonetheless, hiking is not
restricted to the areas where volcanoes are situated. The cloud
forests in the Matagalpa department, and mainly the Selva Negra, in
their turn, have their own accessible hiking trails, on the side of
which specific Central American birds and animals can be spotted.
Biking is another activity for the adventurous tourist. The Ometepe
Island, located on Lake Nicaragua, on which the volcanoes Maderas
and Concepcion are situated, is a great scene for biking. Although
the road is demanding at times, there is nothing a biker loves more
than a challenge.
Biking is great between two small countryside locations on the
island, namely Altagracia and Moyogalpa, and you can even bike
towards the Concepcion, if you are truly prepared to face a trial.
If we move from Lake Nicaragua towards the Atlantic offshore of
Nicaragua, on Little Corn Island, where one can hardly see a car,
trails are paved for pedestrians and bikers. The road is not too
demanding and the setting is picturesque.
There are tourists who find a special feeling in horseback riding.
Beaches are the favorite spots for his activity, and horseback
riding can range between adventurous and romantic depending on who
is accompanying you and on the time of the day you choose for such
an undertaking. The beaches near Managua, such as the endless beach
of Pochomil, or the beaches surrounding San Juan del Sur are very
likely the most popular ones. However, horseback riding is not
limited to these areas; if you happen to visit the Selva Negra
Mountain Resort, additional to hiking opportunities, you can also go
riding a horse around the coffee plantation.
