Something Different
If you are looking for something different, Nicaragua is the perfect
place to go to. Situated between the seas, having various volcanoes,
hundreds of species of fauna and flora, colonial towns, monuments,
with its intense nights, its exquisite traditional cuisine and the
hospitality of its people will definitely make you fall in love with
its lands.
Nicaragua is a republic situated in Central America and is bordered
by Honduras in the North, Costa Rica in the South, the Pacific Ocean
in the West and the Caribbean Sea in the East. The name of the
republic comes from the word Nicarao which is a tribe that inhabited
the shores of Nicaragua Lake before the Spanish conquest of the
Americas, and the Spanish word Agua, meaning water, due to the
presence of the two large lakes: Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua.
Its capital is Managua and the official language is Spanish, but on
the Carribean coast English and indigenous languages are also
spoken. Nicaragua has a total area of 130,000 km2 and a population
of 5,487,500 inhabitants.
The republic was at first a Spanish colony, then, in 1821 became a
part of the United Provinces of Central America (also known as The
Federal Republic of Central America). Finally, in 1838 Nicaragua
became an independent republic. It is made up of three regions: the
Pacific Lowlands, the North-Central Mountains and the Atlantic
Lowlands.
Nicaragua is considered to be a region of lakes and volcanoes, being
at the same time the biggest country in Central America. Its
capital, Managua was once a wonderful city but, in 1972, was
destroyed by an earthquake and has never been rebuilt completely. As
main tourist objectives, we recommend visiting The Old Cathedral of
Managua (a neoclassic cathedral with an original structure of iron
covered by stones), The National Theatre Rubén Dario (that has a
modern and elegant design). Here in Managua you can also find a
volcanic lake- the Managua Lake.
The main attraction in Nicaragua is nevertheless the Mombacho
Volcano located in the Natural Park of Volcano Mombacho. The volcano
measures 1400m high. The volcano is now completely covered with
vegetation, as it has been extinct for many years, and it has
created a rich ecosystem with hundreds of species of birds, mammals
and reptiles, and 750 species of flora. The volcano can be climbed
by foot as well marked tracks have been created. A scientific
laboratory and a small museum were built on its peak.
