Water Activities in Nicaragua
Water Fun in Nicaragua
Nicaragua is a beautiful country with many interesting things to see
and do. To a large extent, the country’s potential has not yet been
fully used by the tourism industry. Those that have seen the
country’s vast array of attractions for what they are worth have
created many interesting touring opportunities for the daring
traveler. The following are just a few of the activities you can
enjoy in Nicaragua.
Perhaps some of the most popular activities available in this
country are those involving water. With a large number of beautiful
beaches available, visitors and locals can enjoy sun tanning,
swimming, surfing, fishing and many other things. Kayaking and
boating are also popular. In certain places where the water is clear
and there are interesting things to see, scuba diving and snorkeling
are also popular. For something different, you can even head up a
volcano to enjoy the warmer waters of a crater lagoon.
Many come to Nicaragua for its surfing. Much like Costa Rica where
surfers opened up the country to international tourism, surfing in
Nicaragua is now leading the way to a giant influx of international
backpackers.
Surfing
in Nicaragua is limited to the waves of the south and central
Pacific Coast. Still the wave selection is truly top quality and
those who have surfed on Nicaragua rave at the empty breaks, long
tube rides and laid back life style along the Nicaraguan coast.
The only
downside to surfing Nicaragua at this point is the lack of road
infrastructure to reach many of the countries best waves and breaks.
Charter boat is a costly but effective solution, though there are
some select spots that the waves can be surfed directly in front of
decent coastal lodging.
Just north of the Oxford Clubhouse, at Playa Limon, is a very good
place for surfing. Another half mile north is “Popoyo” which is
known world wide as the best surfing spot in Central America. You
can easily get to either location by ATV along the beach or by boat.
Nicaragua is still one of surfing best kept secrets, which means you
can have all the big persistent waves to yourself. You can surf
right off of Playa Rosada or go north to Popoyo. At Popoyo and
vicinity you will find all kinds of surf breaks ranging from hollow,
A-frame beach break to super fun, classic point breaks, to critical
outer reef breaks.
The beaches around San Juan del Sur are well known for its great
waves. There is more than 60 km of beach around San Juan del Sur,
most of it not yet discovered by the tourists. The wind is praised
for blowing almost the whole year around. Surfers say it might take
some more effort to surf in Nicaragua than in Costa Rica, but it's
worth it.
