Warm and Friendly
Nicaragua is the largest Central American republic, bordered by
Costa Rica on the South and Honduras on the North. It is a warm and
friendly land of lakes and mountains, rivers and volcanoes, sea and
sun.
As a result of its geographic location between 11 and 15 degrees
latitude north and the humidity from both the Atlantic and Pacific
oceans, Nicaragua has only two seasons: rainy and dry, or winter and
summer. The country has a 90% tropical climate.
Home of the rainforests
Being the second largest rainforest in the Americas, Nicaragua also
has the 7% of the world's biodiversity, occupying a landmass of
130,668 km², roughly the size of Greece or the state of New York and
1.5 times larger than Portugal. The largest tropical rainforests
take place in Los Guatuzos, Bosawás, Indio-Maiz.
Rainforests are characterized by high rainfall, with minimum normal
annual rainfall between 2000 mm and 1750mm, being home to two-thirds
of all the living animal and plant species on the planet.
Weather in the regions of Nicaragua
Nicaragua has three distinct geographic regions: the Pacific
Lowlands, the North-Central Mountains and the Atlantic Lowlands.
The Pacific Lowlands are located in the west side of the country,
being a fertile plain. Known for its famous large volcanoes of the
Maribios mountain-Mombacho and Momotombo, this region is the most
populated area of the country, 27% of the inhabitants living in or
near Managua, the capital of Nicaragua.
In the Central Region the rainy season lasts from May to October.
The dry season lasts from November to April. But the weather is more
temperate during December. The warmest months are March, April and
May, also called: Nicaragua's "sea season".
Being an upland region, away from the Pacific coast, the climate
here is cooler than the Pacific Lowlands. You can find here, in the
deep forests of the Pacific Lowlands a multitude of trees and plants
such as: oaks, pines, moss, ferns and orchids.
Around a quarter of the country's agriculture takes place here, with
culture of coffee, on the higher slopes.
The climate in the Atlantic Coast has the highest temperature and
humidity. The temperature in this region corresponds to that in
tropical jungles, being above 89° F.
This large rainforest is the second largest rainforest in the
Americas, after the Amazon in Brazil.
